Title: Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral)

Accountable to: Headteacher

Responsible for: 11 - 18 Pastoral Organisation and Development

As a Deputy Headteacher of the School, to have responsibility for all day-to-day matters which affect teachers and their teaching, students and their learning and all other employees in professional matters, advising the Headteacher on the strategic direction of the School and acting for the Headteacher in the event of absence. The Deputy Headteacher is also subject to the generic job description as a teacher.

Within the Leadership Structure there are Deputy Headteacher posts, the postholders operate as peers. However, for clarity, in the absence of the Headteacher from the site, the Deputy Headteacher will deputise for the Headteacher in all operational respects.

Individual primary areas of responsibility/accountability

· Development of the School’s educative functions from the perspective of securing effective pastoral systems.

· Leadership in all practical and operational aspects of the pastoral systems in the whole school.

· Personnel

· Strategic direction of pastoral, curricular and managerial oversight responsibilities for all student-focussed matters within the school.

· Liaison with Subject Leaders and Curriculum Co-ordinators on matters of student progress and teacher effectiveness.

· Line management of the assigned Senior Staff and operational leadership of students in terms of behaviour management, welfare, educational progress and personal development.

· In liaison with other Senior Staff, to act as the key point of contact with parents and carers, maximising effective communication and common purpose in the interests of the student.

· Effective liaison with the Headteacher in ensuring consistency of approach to agreed policies throughout the School and across the Year Groups.

· Individual postholders have direct operational pastoral, curricular and managerial oversight responsibilities for the effectiveness of teaching, learning, accommodation and ethos focussed within the school for which s/he is responsible.

· To be accountable to the Headteacher, for all curricular, pastoral and administrative progress and outcomes relating to students and staff within the school.

· Individual postholders will undertake significant School-wide leadership responsibilities as reasonably negotiated with the Headteacher.

School Mission Context

· To support the School’s ethos and work positively and supportively in accordance with agreed policies and procedures, actively seeking to foster good relationships with parents/carers, the local community and all members of the School.

· Quality of Teaching and Learning:- Work with appropriate members of the Senior Team and the wider staff to implement our policies for teaching and learning, with a particular focus on bilingualism, working with them to ensure that the curriculum is relevant to the needs of all students whatever their abilities.

· Availability during school holidays for SLT responsibilities notably during examination results and the shared care of the site.

· Oversight and reviewing of the School Development Plan highlighting it within the focus of the school

Curriculum Management

· Working collaboratively with the Headteacher and colleague Deputy Headteachers, to lead and inspire the community of the School in raising levels of achievement and to secure the planning, delivery and evaluation of effective teaching and learning.

· Working collaboratively with others, to consult, plan, communicate, devise, implement and evaluate the curricular organisation and timetable of the School so as to maximise effective operational and educational best practice.

· With the Headteacher, in the light of the School’s Mission Statement, to identify, plan implement, monitor and evaluate the successful pursuit of the aims of the School, notably leading in the writing and review of the School Development Plan.

· To actively support and promote the value of diverse learning styles and contexts, including working specifically to the agreed Leadership Team oversight of the curriculum teams.

· Working in collaboration with the Leadership Team, take a lead in and keep abreast of current local, national and international educational developments, in particular in relation to the curriculum, ensuring the effective dissemination of best practice and opportunities for research amongst appropriate colleagues.

· Leading and organising departmental reviews and the dissemination of the report.

· Leading work scrutinises

· Developing personalised curriculums through the “stage not age” approach.

Staff Management

· To actively encourage and promote a climate of mutual support across the School workforce in which self-confidence and self-esteem can grow, an effective Leadership Team be nurtured and collaborative teams led and encouraged.

· To promote, establish and monitor systems of Quality Assurance across the School to ensure high expectations are set and met and best practice observed and implemented and, through this, actively support the Assistant Headteachers, ATL’s and CTL’s in their duties in overseeing the work of staff and students, ensuring that consistency, monitoring, evaluation and celebration are explicit in the management of the School.

· To assist, as required, in the appointment process of staff to the School, including Support Staff, paying due regard to the School’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

· In collaboration with the Headteacher, to establish and monitor the effectiveness of consultative procedures and communication systems across the communities of the School in particular relation to behavioural policies and curriculum delivery.

· With the Headteacher, to work closely with the Academy Committee, including attending meetings as required and reporting where appropriate, notably on curricular matters.

Student Management

· As a key operational leader, to ensure that the School has an ethos and daily identity that reflects the mission, policies and procedures of the School.

· To set and actively sustain the highest expectations of standards of achievement and behaviour, establishing and maintaining managerial systems to maximise student achievement of potential, acting, as and when necessary, as the first point of referral for the Assistant Headteachers.

· To pursue and support ways of celebrating student successes at every level whilst also supporting the work of the Assistant Headteachers and all ATL’s in promoting purposeful competition between the Tutor Groups.

· To inspire and lead in the implementation of the curricular focussed aims and procedures of the School, encouraging all colleagues to prompt and consult with students regarding self-evaluation and ownership of their learning together with their personal well-being, thus promoting the development of the whole child.

· To undertake a personal student caseload with responsibility for action, decisions and review of the most confidential and sensitive cases referred upwards.

Resource Management

· To support the work of Assistant Headteachers and relevant CTL’s in their responsibilities for the organisation, accommodation, and teaching resources to ensure most efficient and effective use with minimal loss damage or wastage.

· Assist and support the Headteacher in the preparation of the School Budget, as required, but notably in terms of provision of an appropriate and accurate curricular needs analysis.

· To establish and support appropriate contacts for the use of external agencies and facilities, also identifying the School as a resource to the wider community.

· Development of all technologies and management information systems.

Additional Specific Responsibilities (These will require individual negotiation and annual review) this job description will be reviewed at least annually as part of the Appraisal Process to reflect changing School and individual needs. Consultation between the post holder and the Headteacher and Academy Committee is considered a vital part of this review process.
